Boris Grozdanič Gorjan is a Slovenian photographer whose work seamlessly bridges the worlds of fashion and fine art. He has developed a unique visual language, marked by an intuitive understanding of composition, contrast, and abstraction. His work is defined by a deliberate interplay between presence and absence, sharp definition, and intentional obscurity.
His artistic practice is built on two distinct yet complementary approaches. In his black-and-white series, he explores form, texture, and structure, stripping images down to their essence. These works emphasize sculptural silhouettes, stark contrasts, and the raw interplay of light and shadow, evoking a sense of timelessness and quiet intensity. The images transcend mere abstraction to become a sublimated conceptual dimension. A visual codex is constructed in a way that challenges the immediacy of sight, compelling the viewer to engage in an act of rediscovery. Through deliberate framing, he transforms urban landscapes into rhythmic compositions, where unnoticed details take on an emblematic presence, revealing what is obscured by the loss of awareness of the gaze. To further enhance the pureness of the form he uses analog techique.
In autumn of 2022, his photograph Focusing on Forever was selected for the ZeroPixel Festival, an esteemed analog photography festival in Trieste.
In contrast, his Defocus series moves away from structure entirely. Utilizing bold colors and blurred focus, he deliberately omits defined shapes, immersing the viewer in an ethereal, dreamlike experience. This body of work challenges traditional notions of clarity in photography, embracing abstraction to evoke emotion over representation.
Defocus was a key feature in the BLURRY exhibition at New Jorg Gallery in Belgium in 2024, a showcase dedicated to artists redefining the boundaries of perception.
Beyond his conceptual projects, he has also gained recognition in the fashion industry, where his sharp, sophisticated aesthetic has led to collaborations with leading designers and brands as a photographer and artistic director. Through his lens, he continues to push the boundaries of photographic expression, balancing precision with ambiguity, structure with fluidity — creating images that demand both attention and introspection.
